{Kimberly Dark }
Award Winning Performance Artist, Poet and Scholar

Kimberly Dark is an award-winning, internationally touring performance artist, poet, and lecturer. She combines humor, story-telling, spoken word performance and audience interaction to remind all of us that we are creating the world - even as it creates us!

Her programs include funny and touching spoken word performances, interactive lectures, and full-length theatre shows or excerpts from them. Her work examines the intersections of gender, race and class in ways that invite audiences to see their own lives with humor and compassion. Beyond seeing themselves in her stories, audiences see their own power to create a more just and equitable world.

In addition to her award-winning performances, Dark is at the forefront of a growing movement of public scholarship. Teaching in the sociology department at Cal State San Marcos, her work focuses on women’s lives, queer lives, and how everyday moments of hilarity and horror help to shape our social interactions. Her artistic activism brings critical and important ideas from the social sciences to popular culture.

In a time when media control of human stories is tightening, Dark teaches people everywhere that their stories and experiences of the world are valuable and can be compellingly conveyed through writing, performance and collaboration with others. Her workshops and classes stimulate more stories, more viewpoints and representations of the human spirit.

Performance/Lectures Include:

  • Becoming the Subject of Your Own Story - Rather Than the Object of Another's Gaze
  • Race, Gender and Money
  • "Is that a Dude?" Lesbian Gendering: There's More To It Than You Think!
  • Stripped and Teased: Scandalous Stories with Subversive Subplots
  • Slam Poetry Performances and Workshops

Quote
"Like water seeping into granite, the greater diversity of stories starts to make cracks in the stone of normalcy...We must begin to believe that positive change is possible. Never forget that we are creating the world, even as it creates us..."
-Kimberly Dark
"Your shows reach students with messages t hat promote healthy sexuality, gender roles and body image, and contribute to creating an inclusive climate on campus where these difficult issues can be discussed in a comfortable, educational atmosphere...you made every member of the audience--no matter what their gender or sexual orientation--feel comfortable and valued as a participant in the discussion."
-Abby Ferber, Director of Women's Studies & the Matrix Center for the Advancement of Social Equity and Inclusion, University of Colorado-Colorado Springs
"Dark is an exquisite tour guide for this heartfelt journey into the construction of the self. Through performance poetry, this soul searching and sometimes comical journey leads the audience through the blurred distinctions of gender identity which are precariously balanced between clearly drawn cultural stereotypes."
- Theatermania,Chicago
"Dark's powerful feminine stage presence and poetic style held the audience transfixed from start to finish as she spoke on gender..."
